    "Taking into account the pledges made during the election campaign and the position of the parliamentary parties, I shall not accept that the form of government be changed in Romania during my mandate" Romania's President Emil Constantinescu said on Saturday evening in Bucharest. The President further mentioned that a referendum on that issue was not timely and that the the issue was closed for further discussions. The President's statement was in response to the requests made by the opposition and the Democratic Party in the ruling coalition to make clear his position on the intentioon of the former sovereign of Romania King Mihai I to settle in Romania and of his announcement on December 30, 1997 in Bucharest that he designated his eldest daughterJMargareta as his successor. President Constantinescu said he agreed with the Government's stand which acknowledged the former's sovereign's right to settle in Romania on condition that he observed the Republican Constitution of 1991 and te elected authorities. He added that 1998 would be the year when the success of the economic reform in Romania and the prospect of integration into EU and NATO would be decided.     [02] Laszlo Kovacs Invited Andrei Plesu to Budapest

    The Foreign Minister of Hungary Laszlo Kovacs congratulated in a telephone conversation the new Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Plesu and invited him to Budapest in January 1998 - sources of the Romanian Foreign Ministry told ROMPRES news agency on Sunday. The Hungarian Foreign Minister also expressed his hope that relations between Romania and Hungary would continue to develop at alJ levels. RRI-RADOR, January 5

    [03] Steve Fossett's Journey around the Earth

    The American Steve Fossett who is trying to make a journey around the earth in a baloon, flew over Romania's territory on Sunday. Steve Fossett entered Romania's air space on Saturday to Sunday night at about 23:00 hours local time (21 GMT) and left it at around 10:30 (8:30 GMT). His Baloon flew close to Romania's capital and then entered Bulgaria's air space, flying over the Danube over the Romanian town of Turnu Magurele. Steve Fossett, aged 53, left Saint Louis, Missouri on Wednesday and this is his third attempt to make a journey around the earth in a baloon. RRI-RADOR, January 5
