  • [01] Romania has signed the Treaty on banning anti-personnel mines

Yesterday in Ottawa, Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin has signed in Ottawa the Treaty on banning anti-personnel mines. Mr. Severin declared that the event has both a political and a moral significance for Romania as the country has joined the global disarmament policy and has eliminated the an inhuman weapon. The Romanian foreign minister added that, signing the Convention, Romania proves it has ensured the civil control over the army - one of the conditions for its NATO accession. The Treaty was finalised in Oslo in September, but the main producers of this sort of weapons - Russia, China, the US, Pakistan and India - are not expected to signe the document though they have attended the event as observers. Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy concluded: "We can talk about a real success of the initiative when the money for the distruction of anti-personnel mine stocks and for helping the victims will be delivered". The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has denied information accusing Romania of buying Nazi gold between 1934 and 1945. According to BNR spokesman Adrian Vasilescu, Romania was paid for its deliveries of oil and wheat to Germany during the WW II. Romania was Nazi Germany's ally until August 1944 when it sided with the Allies. Romania is included on a list of countries which allegedly purchased gold from the Nazis. The list also includes Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and Sweden. RRI-RADOR, December 4
