    The Christian-Democart National Peasant Party (PNT-CD), the main party in the Romanian governing coalition, organised a tribute conference dedicated to the Great Union of December 1, 1918. Hosted by the Ceremony Hall of the Agriculture Ministry, the conference had the PNT-CD president and other high ranking politicians as guests. In his speech to the conference, PNT-CD leader Ion Diaconescu stressed that the big victories of the Romanian people were always the result of historic efforts which established the day of December 1 as the legitimate National Day of Romania.

    In the Romanian city of Constantza as well as in the main southern cities between te Black Sea and the Danube, various events were organised in celebration of the 79-th anniversary of Romania's National Day. The Pupils Club in Constantza will host the show "One Thought, One Feeling" where folk and modern dance groups are expected to take part. The Navy Museum will host a painting and sculpture exhibition of military-artist Eugen Ilina of the Tulcea county while the public library in Tulcea will open a book and photo-documents exhibition on "The National Feeling and the Idea on National Unity in History and Literature". The Danubian city of Tulcea will also host the December 1 Cup sport event while in Braila, celebration have started on November 29 and were expected to end on December 6, the St. Nicholas Day, as Saint Nicholas is the guardian saint of the city.

    Other celebrations were reported in the Moldavian city of Botosani, in the village of Sisesti, Maramures (Northern Romania), in Targu Jiu (Southern Romania), etc.

    Celebrations in Alba Iulia started last week and included shows, sessions and religious events. The city of Alba Iulia (Central Romania) is now prepared to receive important guests from all over the country. Yesterday (November 30), a book exhibition opened and a poetry show based on both Eminescu's and Marin Sorescu's poems was released. Participants included big stars of the Romanian stage such as actresses Leopoldina Balanuta and Valeria Seciu, actors Ion Caramitru (also the Romanian Culture Minister), Ovidiu Iuliu Moldovan and actor-singer Tudor Gheorghe.

    Today in Bucharest, hundreds of people are expected to attend the Forum of cultural and scientific organisations around the Michael the Brave Monument down town while the former governing party PDSR (The Party of Social Democracy in Rmania) organised a tribute-show at the Parliament Palace.

    Romanian President Emil Constantinescu and other high ranking officials in the governing coalition are expected to arrive in Alba Iulia and participate in celebrations occasioned by Romania's National Day. RADOR, December 1

    [02] Romania's National Day abroad

    On November 28, a reception was organised by the Romanian mission at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Participants included foreign diplomats, journalists and Romanian-born personalities. Mrs. Nadia Constantinescu, wife of Romanian President Emil Constantinescu, and other Romanian experts working with Council of Europe could be also seen among the guests. Mr. Sabin Pop, Head of the Romanian delegation at the Council of Europe, told Mr. Dragos Seuleanu, Secretary General of Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (SRR), that, four years after joining the Council, Romania is now a dynamic and respected member of the European community.

    The Romanian ambassador to China Virgil Constantinescu organised a press conference in Beijing on November 27 about the significance of December 1 to the Romanian people. Participants included journalists of the Chinese media (central and regional TVs, Radios and newspapers). On November 27, the Romanian embassy in Beijing hosted the meeting of Romanian speaking teachers, experts and journalists in China. A show of the Chinese Romanian speaking students ended the event.

    On November 29, "The Day of the Romanians in Batanya" was organised in the Hungarian town of Batanya on the occasion of Romania's National Day. Participants included the Romanian ambassador to Budapest as well as representatives of the Romanian authorities in Arad. The most important Hungarian Romanian community is leaving in Batanya.

    Other Romanian celebrations were reported in the Yugoslav capital of Belgrade, in Chile, the Republic of Moldova. RADOR, December 1

    [03] President Emil Constantinescu and the Romanian press

    Romanian National Television (TVR), Romanian Radio, PRO TV, ANTENA 1 TV and TELE 7 abc hosted a large interview with President Emil Constantinescu on November 28, on the occasion of his first anniversary as President of Romania. During the interview, Mr. Constantinescu said that the cut in the budget deficit and the privatisation of indstrial giants could be seen as a succes, but he admitted that the Romanians have expressed their discontent caused by recent developments in the country. At the same time, he said that sacrifices will not end in the very next future though he did not offer an answer to the daily questions and concerns of the people. Referring to the situation in Romanian Hungarian counties of Harghita and Covasna, the president said that both sides have presented exagerated reports and nobody was to win following such useless disputes. Avoiding critics concerning the current governing coalition, Mr. Constantinescu has encouraged the government to continue its economic reform and estimated that good results were expected only by the middle of next year.     [04] Romanian sport minister resigned

    On November 29, Romanian Sport Minister Sorin Stanescu has resigned. He declared that he resigned because he could not accept the idea of a dismissal following the government reshuffle. Mr. Stanescu has blamed the Liberal National Party (PNL) leaders for not inviting him to participate in the debates concerning his dismissal. RADOR, December 1

    [05] Another possible resignation: Culture Minister Ion Caramitru

    On November 29, Culture Minister Ion Caramitru declared that he resigned on November 1 wishing to express his protest against the attitude the government had in its relations with the revoultionaries of December '89. Mr. Caramitru said he did not get any answer by now though he expected Prime Minister Ciorbea to react. However, he indicated that Mr. Ciorbea urged him to stay until December 31 and conclude his budget report of 1997. RADOR, December 1

    Weather in Romania will be rather cold and cloudy in most of the country. Temperatures will range from -2 centigrades in the morning to 10 centigrades at noon. RADOR, December 1
