Subject: From: bip@sf.cit.bg (Bulgarian Information Pool) BALKAN INFORMATION POOL - SOFIA _________________________________________________________ NEWSLETTER Time for release: 9.30 a.m. Monday, August 28, 1995 ____________________________________________________________ THE LAST THREE DAYS ____________________________________________________________ VISITS * The Bulgarian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Pirinsky returned from the two-day tripartite meeting between the Romanian, Bulgarian and Greek Foreign ministers held in Greece. The Bulgarian delegation included representatives of the Foreign Ministry, Sports, Labor and Social Welfare Ministries, 4 economic chambers and a number of banks and companies. The participants in the meeting assessed as useful the talks. Issues concerning the infrastructure, telecommunications, raods, etc. in the Balkan region were discussed together with the Yugo-conflict. The three ministers shared the opinion that peaceful means shall be applied in the solution of the conflict. The three sides excluded the military intervention. The three sides hope that gradually the Yugo-embargo sanctions could be lifted gradually. ___________________________________________________________ PRESS ROUND UP ____________________________________________________________ All central dailies focus the attention on the visits of Foreign Minister Pirinsky to Greece and the visit of UDF's leader Ivan Kostov to Russia. DOUMA Comments: "Greece Supported Bulgaria's Proposal for a New Bridge over Danube" Greek President Stefanopoulos will visit Romania and Bulgaria before the end of the year. At the meeting the three Foreign Ministers agreed to cooperate for the elimination of the technical and bureaucratic barriers stumbling the development of the transport and business connections between the countries. The need for construction of a new bridge over Danube is one of the highlights in the concluding communique presented at the end of the meeting. The bridge is a prerequisite for the connection of the three Balkan states with Western and Eastern Europe. A few Balkan meetings scheduled for the coming months were fixed by ministers and experts in Greece. The Bulgarian chairman of the Posts and Long-Communications Committee will discuss in Sofia with his Greek and Romanian counterparts projects that will be implemented before 2000. Chiefs of the Transport Ministries will discuss in Sofia their approaches during the summit of Transport Ministers from the EU member-states scheduled for the end of September [Brussels]. STANDART Comments: Greece got everything it wanted from the meeting of the three Foreign Ministers in Yanina. The Bulgarian government was unaware how it shifted its position and moved to the other side of the barricade that considers the Yugo-sanctions negative and Miloshevich - positive phenomenon. Secondly, it was repeated that Athens holds the keys for Bulgaria's integration in Europe. Thirdly, Greece managed to assume the role of a wise arbiter and settle the dispute between under-aged who can't really decide where the bridge shall be raised. PARI Comments: "The Balkan Cooperation behind the Chengen's Curtain" Contrary to the efforts of insiders to persuade us that Greece backed the Bulgarian position, nothing similar to that happened. Greek Foreign Minister Papoulyas failed to achieve reconciliation between his two Balkan colleagues. Bulgaria won't receive money if it quarrels with Romania, while Greece won't use the transport corridor to Europe if its spoils its relations with Romania. The bridge will foster the progress of Norther Greek regions Macedonia and Thrace. CONTINENT Comments: "The Positions on the Construction of a Second Bridge over the Danube River get closer," said Foreign Minister of Romania Theodore Melescanu. * Today's Exchange Rates of the National Bank of Bulgaria are: ________________________________________________________ GRD 100 28.638 CHF 1 55.587 USD 1 68.038 JPY 100 70.142 XEU 1 86.170 ===================================================== ____________________________________________________________ NEWSLETTER is a daily, briefing the last 24 hours' news, reviewing the morning press and the economic news in Bulgaria.
