PETROS IOANNOU

Biographical Information

I was born in Athens in 1953. Educated at Cambridge University (B.A. & M.A. in Mathematics) and Harvard University (M.Sc. & Ph.D in Applied Mathematics / Meteorology). I returned to Greece to serve in the Hellenic Navy as a petty officer. I was subsequently appointed Advisor to the Prime Minister of Greece Andreas Papandreou (1986-1990). My most notable achievement during this period is the initiation and drafting of the legislation for the deregulation of media in Greece. I also served as Vice President of the Paedagogical Institute of Greece (1989-1991) in charge of the curricula of secondary education. From 1991 I am with the Department of Earth and Planetary Physics at M.I.T. as a research scientist. My current research efforts are in climate dynamics, turbulence, and planetary astronomy.
