40 YEARS

SINCE THE POGROM AGAINST THE GREEK MINORITY IN ISTANBUL ON SEPTEMBER 6 to 7, 1955

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
RESOLUTION
To protest the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Turkey against the Greeks of Istanbul in 1955

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the night of September 6 to 7, 1955 in Istanbul, during which the Turkish State unleashed a pogrom against the Greek Minority, we the undersigned citizen's organizations and associations herewith resolve to bring this resolution to the attention of the government, parliament, public opinion and mass media of Greece and of other law-abiding states:

  • WE PROTEST Turkish expansionist policies, militarist practices and flagrant violations of international treaties regarding the basic human rights of minority populations as well as the ethnic cleansing this country is presently undertaking against minority populations such as the Kurds, the Armenians and the (remnants of) Greeks and a number of religious denominations which are denied the free assertion of their identity.

  • WE HOLD that policies of underplaying and passing over in silence such ongoing violations until now, a usual practice on the part of third parties, organizations and even the Hellenic government run counter to both the spirit and letter of International Law. Moreover, Turkey interprets this as a covert signal of condonement or encouragement.
On the contrary, a responsible and conscientious reporting of atrocities and an exposure of their perpetrator in the eyes of global opinion would facilitate respect and compliance with the dictates of morality and law. At the same time, such a practice would also serve to enlighten Turkish youth by exposing it to the wisdom of discounting the atrocities of older generations against minorities.

In light of the above, we resolve to demand, each one and collectively, the following:

  • From the Hellenic Parliament: To declare officially the date of Spetember 6th as a "Day of Remembrance" with respect to the events of September 6 to 7, 1955 in Istanbul.

  • From the Turkish Parliament: To recognize and apologize formally for the atrocities Turkey perpetrated on September 6 to 7, 1955 in Istanbul.

  • From the European Parliament: To adopt the date of September 6th as a "Memorial Day of Violations against Human Rights".
Lastly, we resolve to deliver a formal copy of this Resolution to the Ambassador of Turkey in Athens and to post a wreath of flowers, as token of our grief and protest, on the gate of the Turkish Embassy.
