State Department: Serbia - Montenegro - Public Announcement, July 10, 1997

Serbia - Montenegro - Public Announcement
July 10, 1997

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

Recent arrests in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia of persons indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia on charges of war crimes may raise the level of tension in the region. While these arrests have taken place outside of Serbia-Montenegro, the actions could result in heightened sensitivies among the local population, particularly on Serbia's borders with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade urges American citizens resident in or travelling through Serbia-Montenegro to take appropriate precautions. In addition, the Department of State's Travel Warning dated June 5, 1996, warns U.S. citizens not to travel to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

American citizens already in Serbia-Montenegro may contact the U. S. Embassy for current security information. The Embassy is located at Kneza Milosa 50, Belgrade; telephone (381)(11) 645-655.

For further general information on travel to Serbia-Montenegro, consult the latest Department of State Consular Information Sheet.

This Public Announcement expires on August 31, 1997.
