Commonwealth's Solidarity

On 21 October 1991 the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, unanimously adopted a resolution which "reiterated its support for the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and non-aligned status of Cyprus" and for "securing compliance with all the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus". The resolution also "emphasized the need for the speedy withdrawal of all foreign forces and settlers from the Republic of Cyprus, the return of the refugees to their homes in safety, the restoration and respect for the human rights of all Cypriots and the accounting for the missing".
On 21 October the Commonwealth Summit unanimously accepted the invitation of the Republic of Cyprus to host its 12th biennial meeting in 1993, a decision which the then President Vassiliou called "a great honour for Cyprus and whose significance for Cyprus is paramount".
