TWENTY-NINTH ORDINARY SESSION
RESOLUTION 657 (1977)1
on the situation in Cyprus
The Assembly,
- Referring to its Recommendation 759 (1975) and Resolution 615 (1976) on the
situation in Cyprus;
- Deeply concerned by the political deadlock in the intercommunal negotiations;
- Being aware of its political responsibilities, and realising that every effort must be made
to contribute to a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus crisis:
- Appeals following the parliamentary elections of 5 June 1977 in Turkey, to the parties
directly concerned actively to facilitate and support the resumption of intercommunal talks
under the auspices of the Secretary General of the United Nations with the aim of reaching
a settlement freely negotiated between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities;
- Instructs the Political Affairs Committee to report on the latest political developments of
the Cyprus question on the basis of information gathered from the parties directly
concerned in Ankara, Athens and Nicosia.
